Requirements

NOTE FOR 64-BIT USERS

If you have any problems with MCP, right click your shortcut and on the "Compatibility" tabsheet see it to "Windows XP SP3" or something similar.  I am looking in to this problem before this goes to a final release.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.7, 5.x or higher should be installed and operational on your computer.  Additionally, BB Device Manager (bbdevmgr.exe) should be running automatically with Windows at each reboot.

Windows XP

Windows XP SP1/SP2/SP3 (all SP's) both in 32-Bit & 64-Bit have been tested and seem to work fine.  Windows XP original (without any SP's) is too old and has not been tested.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista Home Edition and Professional, original versions and SP1, including 32-Bit & 64-Bit versions have all been lightly tested.

Windows 7 RC1

I have been using MCP on Windows 7 32-Bit (Work) and Windows 7 64-Bit (Home) since Windows 7 RC1 was released.  It works perfectly!

OSX 10.5.5 (Leopard)

While it is not a "native" application for Apple, MCP also works inside VMWare Fusion with Windows XP SP2 on OSX 10.5.5 (Leopard).  Thanks for the information Jonathan!

Has anyone tested MCP in VMWare or VirtualBox under any Linux distribution?  It sounds like it should work.  Let me know!

8/30 - I have had no feedback here, I might start testing tomorrow.

Windows Vista/7 Notes

The only known problem right now with Vista is that for some reason the MCP applet doesn't show up in Windows Control Panel after installation.  This is minor but I will look into it.  I haven't checked in Windows 7...  well, shit on me, it's not there either.  Grr!

Starting with Beta 6 MCP works fine with UAC enabled!

Might be Required:  Administrator Privileges might need to be enabled (there are two possibilites):

(A) The current Windows User Account must be an Administrator (or possibly Power User).  Due to simplicity, this method is preferred, if possible.

-OR-

(B) The shortcut to MCP has to be forced to run with administrator privileges (this is the bottom option on the Compatibility tabsheet of MCP's shortcut properties).

Initial tests of the second method (B) were mixed...  while it does work, if RIM Device Manager is running on the system from a standard user account and you later run MCP with administrator privileges, the mouse pointer will flip to an hourglass every 2 seconds.  Possible avoidance:  right click and exit RIM Device Manager (System Tray) and restart your admin version of MCP.  I need feedback on that though!!!

Vista note...  if the above conditions (#1 required, #2 might be required) are not met, the Operating System Management page will never be able to function properly because Vista will not allow MCP to manipulate files on your system in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folders, which is where the OS files are located.  If you see goofy behavior with the Operating System Management page in MCP, one of these two conditions is most likely the cause.

Q:  Under OS Management, when I try to turn all of the modules in a section Off, they all uncheck, but then a second later they are all checked again.  Also if I click the right button in the Removed Files section to open the "Removed Files" folder -((- if "Messages" is checked in Settings then I see a message that shows a path to the Removed Files folder and then I click Ok/Cancel -))- instead of opening the "Removed Files" folder it opens an Explorer window my in My Documents.

A:  See the "Vista Caveats" section (above).  Goofy problems with OS Management are caused when both of these conditions are not met.  If UAC is on, MCP can't create the RemovedFiles folder, and it can't move any of the OS files.
